When I got online looking for ways to supplement my income back in 1999 I didn’t have my own product(s) to sell. Even if I would have had my own products, I didn’t have the knowledge required to know how to sell them online.

I’ve owned several businesses over the last 30 years, and I’ve learned what it takes to build a business that earns a profit. That said, I think it is unrealistic to expect someone with no knowledge of marketing, advertising, and building a business to “get” the SFI opportunity quickly. When I read it a couple of years ago, I started understanding the huge differences between the left side of Kiyosaki’s quadrant (employee and self-employed) and the right side of the quadrant (business owner and investor).

Employees and self-employed people trade time for money on a more or less static ratio that only changes if they get a raise, charge more per hour or per project, or find a way to reduce expenses. If you work, you earn a certain amount, generally several dollars per hour.

On the other hand, business owners and investors learn how to concentrate their efforts and money up front, receiving a larger return in the future as their investments are leveraged and compounded.

For example, as the owner of a marketing business run almost entirely online, I’m earning money for things I did last week, last month, and even several years ago, because I invested the time, effort, and money over time in the past. As a result, today I have several income streams that provide 100% of my income, letting me work from a cabin in the mountains about 100 miles from the nearest traffic jam. I really do earn while I sleep!

The patience required to keep building and looking for potential comes from my experience of building and owning past businesses and watching, over time, as my income from my marketing business continues to grow. 11. When you purchase a product and it exceeds your expectations e-mail the business a testimonial. Make sure your statement is detailed. Give them permission to publish it on their web site if they link to your site.

12. Create a directory of web sites on a specific topic. Give people the option of adding the directory to their web site by linking to it. Put your business ad at the top of the directory’s home page.

13. Exchange content with other web sites. You could trade articles, top ten lists, etc. Both parties could include a resource box at the end of the content.

14. Allow people to download software at no charge from your web site, if they link to your web site. The software could be freeware, shareware or demos.

16. Give away web space to people for free. Since you are giving it away for free, request they link to your site by placing your ad or banner to the site.

17. Join or create a web ring. A web ring is a group of web sites on a similar subject agreeing to link together. To find a web ring to join type keywords “web rings” into your search engine of choice.

18. Create an online club or association. Tell your visitors what’s included in the membership and what it costs to join. Offer them a free membership if, in exchange, they link to your web site.

19. Allow people to use an online service or utilities from your web site if, in exchange, they link to your web site. The online service could be an e-mail account, search engine submission, web page design, copywriting, proofreading, etc.

20. Offer a free e-book to your web site visitors. The ebook should be related to your target audience. Allow them to give the e-book to their own web site visitors by linking directly to your web site.

Instead of commuting to a place you hate, to do a job you dislike, with obnoxious co-workers, you may be able to start your own business and work from home. To succeed at this, you need to plan carefully. This article will show you some things to consider when you think about establishing your own home business.

The first thing you want to think about is what you enjoy spending time doing. If you make sure to pick something you enjoy, it’ll be a lot easier to get it started (mostly because you already know a lot about your own hobbies). Think about it in terms of what you do. Do you like taking walks? Try dog walking. Do you like kids? You could start doing day-care. There are really a huge amount of possibilities here, so take some time to think this through. A great way to get ideas if you’re low on ideas is talking to friends and family. You’ll have some top-notch ideas in no time!

Secondly, take a look around you and determine if your business would thrive in the community in which you live. Go through the yellow pages and see if there are other businesses that you will need to compete with. Keep in mind, also, that there may be a demand for certain services or products no matter how many other similar businesses are around; for example, if you’re really good with children and you feel that a daycare center is what you would like to consider, it’s a very good possibility that other daycare centers in your area could be full and not accepting new clients. If that’s the case, this would be an excellent opportunity for you.

Another helpful tip is to give your business added flare. Try adding something special that makes your product/service better than the rest. If you offer guitar lessons, don’t forget to mention any other instruments you know how to play. If you offer web-page design, don’t forget to mention what you offer that makes your services stand out.

It’s a good idea to plan a transition into your home-based business. A lot of businesses don’t start to make a profit for the first months or year and yet you keep getting that pesky electric bill. There are two things to consider in the transition. One is start saving up some of that pay check to tide you over. Give up fancy coffee or cigarettes or other optional items so that you have enough money in your savings account to keep you going for at least six months.

The other thing is to start doing your business on a part-time basis so you can build up your client base. Yes, you will be working about 16 hours a day: 8 on your regular job and maybe 8 on your business. The nice thing is that any profits that you don’t plow back into the business can help you build up that savings account.

At last! You’ve done everything you had to do. You decided what type of business you wanted to start, you’ve invested in your business and saved for that rainy day, and the moment is here, you can finally say goodbye to the job you can’t stand and the co-workers who have gotten under your skin. You’ve come a long way, but your challenges are still not over, even if your business is turning a profit. At this point in time, you need to remind yourself that you are still working. You have to set a schedule for yourself, determine what you’re going to do each day, and keep yourself in that “business as usual mode”. It can be quite challenging to get up at 6:00 a.m. every day when you realize that you don’t have a timecard to punch, but just because you no longer have a supervisor, that doesn’t mean you no longer have responsibilities.

Even in challenging economic times it is possible to have your own home based business. It requires creative thinking, planning ahead, and hard work. But in the end, it is rewarding, and can be extremely profitable if you set up everything correctly.
